Google Takes Direct Aim at Microsoft 365 Customers, Declares 5x Faster Migration to Workspace

At Google Cloud Next 2026, Google launched an aggressive marketing campaign directly targeting Microsoft. The company declared that migration speeds for Microsoft 365 users switching to Google Workspace have increased by up to five times. It also unveiled new "Workspace Intelligence" features to compete head-on with Microsoft Copilot. Furthermore, Google announced major initiatives in the customer experience (CX) field and a new developer agent platform, signaling a direct challenge to Microsoft's dominant position in the enterprise AI market. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized Google's "open and choice-driven" approach to differentiate itself from competitors.
Google Takes Direct Aim at Microsoft 365 Customers, Declares 5x Faster Migration to Workspace

Google has issued a direct challenge to Microsoft in the enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) and productivity software market. In an aggressive marketing move, Google explicitly named its competitor to lure existing Microsoft 365 users to switch platforms.

At the annual enterprise conference "Google Cloud Next 2026" in Las Vegas on April 22 (local time), Yulie Kwon Kim, Vice President of Product for Google Workspace, announced, "The speed of migrating entire organizations, including complex finance departments, from Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace has increased by up to five times." This demonstrates Google's strong commitment to dismantling what is considered the biggest barrier to entry in the enterprise software market: the cost and complexity of migration.

Google's primary weapons are 'Workspace' and the AI platform 'Gemini Enterprise' built upon it. Workspace is a suite of collaboration tools including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Chat, while Gemini is the enterprise AI that operates on top of it, performing tasks like report writing, email organization, meeting summaries, and searching internal data. At the event, Google unveiled a new feature called "Workspace Intelligence" in an attempt to differentiate itself from Microsoft's "Copilot."

Workspace Intelligence is a single AI layer applied across all Workspace apps—Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Chat. It leverages Gemini's reasoning capabilities to find information scattered across multiple apps at once and automatically generate necessary materials. In a demonstration, a presenter acting as a manager for a furniture distributor requested a search for a specific document and the creation of new marketing materials within Google Chat. The AI then cross-referenced relevant emails, chats, and documents to automatically generate slides tailored to the company's brand.

Google Workspace Intelligence Key FeaturesDescription
Unified Information SearchAI searches for information scattered across multiple Workspace apps by understanding context.
Automatic Document CreationGenerates professional drafts based on email, chat, and document data with simple commands.
Brand/Style ApplicationAutomatically applies company brand guidelines and the user's writing style.
Cross-App Context UnderstandingResolves information silos between apps using Gemini embedding models.

This aggressive strategy comes as Microsoft has been capturing the office AI market by integrating Copilot across its entire 365 product suite. VP Kim's announcement is interpreted as a direct declaration aimed at winning over Microsoft customers. Google appears intent on breaking down its competitor's biggest barrier not only with technological superiority but also by playing the practical card of "ease of migration."

Successful adoption cases highlighted included global consumer goods company Colgate-Palmolive (34,000 employees) and Korean Air (over 22,000 global employees). Colgate reported that its own AI agent derives new product concepts from decades of sales data in a matter of minutes, while Korean Air is reportedly utilizing AI agents for operational tasks.

Meanwhile, Google also launched a full-scale offensive in the customer experience (CX) field. A real-world example of "Gemini Enterprise for CX," launched earlier this year, was demonstrated with YouTube TV's AI voice customer support agent. The AI, answering a customer's call, recommended a subscription plan for an NFL Sunday Ticket inquiry and sent a sign-up link via text. When the customer later added, "My father-in-law doesn't speak English," the agent seamlessly switched to explaining in Spanish. This voice agent is already operational for 100% of YouTube TV customers.

At the event, Google also unveiled a new "Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform" for developers. This platform, evolved from the existing Vertex AI, is designed to comprehensively manage the building, scaling, and governance of agents. It supports over 200 models (including Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemma open models, and Anthropic's Opus 4.7) and enhances security with features like "Agent Identity," which assigns an encrypted ID to each agent.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, stated, "Others are trying to lock models, data, and agents inside their walled gardens... We provide the freedom to freely choose the best chips and models, operate AI wherever the data resides, and have direct control over governance." This remark contrasts Microsoft and OpenAI's "closed" approach with Google's "open and choice-driven" method, highlighting the difference in platform strategies for the AI era.

Google's offensive is being evaluated not merely as a product upgrade, but as a signal flare marking the start of a full-scale battle to change the dynamics of the enterprise productivity market long dominated by Microsoft. As corporate demand for AI and digital transformation explodes, competition between the two tech giants is expected to intensify further.
