UBTech Unveils $17,600 Ultra-Bionic Humanoid Robot, Racks Up 13,000 Orders in China

China’s UBTech has thrown open the doors to a new consumer robotics era, unveiling the UWORLD U1—a full-sized, ultra-bionic humanoid robot designed specifically for emotional companionship and mass production. The Shenzhen-based company reported that cumulative orders for the U1 series had already surpassed 13,361 units as of the June 30, 2026 launch event, signaling robust early demand for a machine that aims to blur the line between functional tool and lifelong companion.
The U1 series starts at 119,800 yuan (approximately $17,666) for the semi-torso U1 Lite edition and climbs to 990,000 yuan (approximately $145,990) for the high-dynamic, full-body U1 Ultra model. A mid-tier U1 Pro, featuring a full-body high-performance design, is priced at 169,800 yuan (approximately $25,039). UBTech expects to begin deliveries in mid-September, with a production target of more than 10,000 units this year.
“Our bionic robots can accompany you for a lifetime,” Michael Tam, Chief Brand Officer of UBTech and General Manager of UWORLD, told the audience in Shenzhen. “It will never betray you, will always be loyal to you, and will love you unconditionally.”
A New Category of Companion
The UWORLD U1 represents a strategic pivot for UBTech, which has until now been best known for deploying its industrial Walker S series humanoid robots in automotive factories and logistics centers. The company ranked first globally in full-sized embodied intelligent humanoid robot revenue and sales volume in 2025, and with UWORLD, it now aims to build a second growth engine in the consumer market.
James Zhou, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of UBTech, outlined a three-stage vision for human-robot collaboration: first, removing humans from dangerous and repetitive tasks; second, weaving robots into everyday life through companionship and service applications; and finally, achieving seamless interaction between humans and intelligent machines. Zhou said the company will continue to devote roughly 50% of its resources to industrial robotics while channeling the other half into companion robots. “Family companion robots have the most imagination and are the most capable of building an ecosystem,” he said in a media briefing after the launch.
The U1 series features 88 degrees of freedom and a proprietary dual-pivot biomimetic cervical spine, enabling it to replicate up to 90% of fundamental human movements. Its skin replicates pores, blood vessels, and fingerprints with tactile realism. The male model stands 183 cm tall and weighs 42 kg, while the female model measures 168 cm and weighs 35.2 kg. Both versions can blink, smile, tilt their heads, and track a user’s gaze.
Under the hood, the robot is powered by what UBTech calls the world’s first emotion-aware large language model (LLM) designed for long-term companionship. The system can recognize more than 20 fine-grained emotional states with an accuracy rate above 90%. A biomimetic fast-and-slow brain architecture, inspired by cognitive neuroscience, combines a 500-millisecond intuitive response system with deep reasoning driven by models containing hundreds of billions of parameters. Speech-to-lip synchronization latency is held to within 20 milliseconds, creating what the company describes as a remarkably lifelike interaction experience.
The Manufacturing Bottleneck: Eyebrows and Eyelashes
Despite the advanced AI, the steepest challenge in scaling production is surprisingly low-tech. Zhou acknowledged that manufacturing the ultra-bionic robots is “unprecedented in human production history.” During the initial production phase, each eyebrow and eyelash must be implanted by hand. Building an automated production line capable of replicating that level of manual precision remains a core hurdle. UBTech aims to achieve a production capacity of 50,000 units by 2027.
Jiao Jichao, Vice President of UBTech and head of its Embodied Intelligence and Humanoid Robot Research Institute, explained that the complexity is concentrated in the head assembly, involving facial muscle actuation, neck linkage, and binocular eye movement. Many components have no off-the-shelf suppliers and must be developed in-house.
On-site reports from the launch event noted that while the robot’s physical appearance was strikingly realistic, the interaction experience showed room for improvement. Conversations with the built-in emotional LLM exhibited slight lag, and facial expressions retained a degree of mechanical stiffness. During a waltz performance with a human dancer, the female robot’s movements appeared somewhat halting.
Privacy, Memory, and a Digital Life Framework
UWORLD’s Agent Memory OS functions as a cross-temporal memory system designed to establish a persistent digital life framework. A proactive care engine uses environmental perception to enable interaction without a wake word, allowing the robot to respond naturally to contextual cues. UBTech emphasized that users retain ownership of their data, backed by a three-layer privacy architecture: local-first processing, minimal cloud dependency, and user-controlled hardware safeguards.
Users who pay for the Ultra edition can customize the robot’s hair, face, and outfit to resemble a loved one, a celebrity, or an imaginary character. The system incorporates 3D facial reconstruction and voiceprint-based identity replication technologies, combined with dedicated long-term memory, to recreate designated individuals.
A Market for Millions
Tam cited projections that China’s ultra-bionic humanoid robotics market could expand from tens of billions of RMB to the trillion-RMB level between 2026 and 2036. The immediate addressable market is vast: China has more than 90 million adults living alone and 118 million empty-nest seniors, with an estimated 10% to 20% of solo dwellers meeting clinical criteria for mental health disorders.
At the launch, UWORLD introduced the “Human-Robot Companionship Initiative,” pledging to donate 100 customized U1 series humanoid robots in 2026 to support vulnerable groups, including children separated from parents, elderly individuals living alone, and families in distress. The donated units will be equipped with structured psychological support capabilities.
UBTech’s push into consumer robotics comes as China solidifies its position as the world’s largest humanoid robot market. According to Barclays, the country accounted for 85% of global humanoid installations in 2025. More than 140 Chinese companies had launched over 330 humanoid robot models by last year, with the government designating robotics as a strategic industry.
Zhou noted that total humanoid robot revenue is expected to exceed 80% of UBTech’s overall income in 2026. The company, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, has already achieved mass production of its Walker S2 industrial humanoid robot and is now betting that emotional companionship will prove to be a durable consumer category.
Lian Jye Su, a Singapore-based chief analyst at Omdia, told Agence France-Presse that companion robots hold value “in a niche market” such as elderly care or mental wellness, but cautioned that products must clear the “uncanny valley” barrier—where near-human appearance triggers unease rather than comfort—to achieve broad acceptance. UBTech maintains that the data processed by U1 robots is encrypted and will not be used to train its AI models, a critical assurance as regulators worldwide scrutinize the emotional risks of human-AI attachment.
